U.S. Embassy in Abidjan warns about violence, advises caution

As Cote d’Ivoire enters today a critical week leading to the 31 October controversial presidential election, with the likelihood of more violence and loss of life, the U.S. embassy in Abidjan today issued a warning about the violence and advises American citizens to be cautious.
In a communication available online, the embassy’s Consular Chief, Stacie R. Hankins, warns Americans about the possible escalation of civil disobedience, including road blockages, traffic disruptions, and demonstrations instigated by Ivorian opposition parties in protest of President Ouattara’s controversial run for a third term. The embassy advises U.S. Citizens residing in or visiting Cote d’Ivoire to avoid large crowds and remain vigilant.
Precautionary actions recommended by the embassy include: monitor local media for updates; maintain a low profile; avoid demonstrations; be aware of your surroundings; review your personal security plans, and request assistance when needed.
U.S. Citizens with emergencies can call (+225) 2249 4000 during office hours and (+225) 2249 4450 after hours.
Since President Ouattara announced his intention to seek a third term in early August, which goes against the constitutional prescription for two terms maximum, Abidjan, the largest city and economic hubb, and several cities upcountry have been rocked by violence.
According to the Ivorian minister in charge of security and civil protection, Gen. Vagondo Diomandé, who appeared on national television over the weekend, 16 people lost their lives and 67 others were wounded during the outbreak of violence that shook Dabou, a town 50 kilometers from Abidjan, on Friday.
The deadly clashes in Dabou between pro-opposition and the ruling party members was only the most recent one in a series that many fear might pave the way for a large-scale violence like the post-election civil war that resulted in the loss of 3,000 lives in 2010-2011.
