These are excerpts from the author’s book “Deep,” which contains eight of his small books published in the form of Wisdom Literature covering different aspects of life: Facing troublemakers, dealing with pain, personal financial issues, gastronomy, reading, criticizing, inspiring, and feeling always good to go.

Series 8: Life Painkillers

Book cover

This week: Failure to Pass a Job Interview

Symptom: Either lack of self-confidence in career or likely some level of paranoia.

Diagnosis: Losing a critically needed recruitment opportunity subsequent to a remarkable performance on a job interview, likely after a series of similar cases of less severity.

Painkiller:

  • Remind yourself that others’ decisions are their own opinions and not absolute judgments on your abilities.

  • Remember how you could overcome all previous similar incidents.

  • Be more grateful in your current job, whatever it is.

  • Don’t hesitate to reward yourself in a childish way, such as enjoying your favorite dessert.

Treatment:

  • Remember that life is greater and more complex than just being affected by missing one or even a number of chances.

  • Try to review your performance carefully and get some lessons to learn, even if they are about how to deal with others’ mistakes.

  • Allow yourself some time before making a serious decision on your future career.

  • Remember that you are always free to change your career at any time.
