We are the African butterfly! The world needs our colors

BY NIGERIAN AUTHOR AND EDUCATOR AMARA CHIDINMA EZEDINIRU
An African butterfly is a diverse group of butterflies that are found throughout the African continent. With over 1,000 species, the African butterfly is known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, making it a favorite among butterfly enthusiasts.
The African Monarch
Renowned for its bright orange color with black veins.
Just like the African, its migratory habit takes it to the length and breadth of the continent.
We are everywhere, adding value to where we go.
The African swallowtail
Her striking patterns and colors keep it standing out.
She loves to feed on flowers.
Her female warriors deter predators by mimicking other species.
Doesn’t she exhibit the African man’s spirit?
With a leash, gagged lips and restrained, we still fought, fought hard for our freedom.
The Bush Beauty
Feeds on tree sap.
Reminds me of our unbreakable pact with nature. Our melanin skin is ever-friendly with the sun and a wonder to behold.
Despite the limitations the larval stage encounters by feeding on certain grass species, it still morphs into a beauty.
The African is beautiful.
The symbol of transformation!
Our butterfly symbolizes transformation to us.
Transformation in all subjects – mathematics, pathology, logic, biology, physics, theatre and more denotes one meaning – change in appearance for good.
Our butterflies remind us of the endless possibilities of turning into comeliness from our unpalatable state.
The Beauty!
No doubt butterflies are effortlessly beautiful, their soft skin depicts the tenderness of our African souls. We portray the essence of life – hospitable, warm, generous and more.
We are altogether lovely!
Despite their beauty and cultural significance, many species of African butterflies are threatened by habitat loss and climate change.
Deforestation.
Agricultural expansion.
Urbanization.
How can we possibly increase our conservation efforts for them?
We are threatened too.
We are unsafe on their land.
In our land, they secretly instigate us one against the other.
They fear that our togetherness will further spread our aroma, the savory fragrance of a colorful butterfly.
What shall we do?
We will remain resolute in our belief.
The belief that the world needs our colours.
The colors brighten dullness.
The dullness leads to boredom.
Boredom becomes a devil’s workplace.
We are the African butterfly!
